Hi Igor,
The iar-brake on the original Carbon Dragon consisted of a large, delta
shaped spoiler mounted directly behind the pilot's head and actuated by a
lever next to his left ear! I have not flown a Carbon Dragon yet so I can't
comment first hand on how well it works but I have spoken to Rick Mullins
(USA) who recently completed and started flying his CD. Rick says that the
spoiler/air-brake works but is difficult to open further than about
20degrees or so, when the pressure of the air makes opening it too difficult
during the landing phase. A longer lever could probably be used to gain
greater mechanical advantage and allow easier opening of the brake.
The delta shaped air brake was designed to make the vortices / turbulence
dissipate in a wide V either side of the tail and not interfere with the
rudder and elevator. As far as I am aware, this works!
For my own Carbon Dragon (still being built) I intend to dispense with the
original air brake spoiler and equip the wings with Schempp-Hirth type
airbrakes on a Slingsby Capstan (upper and lower surface) outboard of the
H-stab to elimenate any degredation in performance of the rudder and
elevator - also to keep the cockpit ergonomics similar to mainstream
sailplanes. S-H air brakes should be considerably easier to deploy and
control even at full extension. Take a look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_brake_%28aircraft%29 for some other air
brake designs.
Hope this helps,
Phil.
