Accidents do happen
While there are thousands of the home-built planes flying safely on weekends and clear days, National Transportation and Safety Board data shows 114 fatal accidents involving ultralight planes between 1980 and 2005, including two in Palm Bay in the 1980s. In addition, there have been 135 non-fatal accidents nationwide.
Catherine Hall, who belongs to the EAA's Merritt Island chapter, said people's perceptions of experimental aircraft as dangerous is based on a lack of education.
"When you look at the number of takeoffs and landings every day -- hundreds of thousands -- it's still far safer than driving a car," Hall said.
